S.T.A.R.T. 3.

I was invited to speak at the technical colloquium entitled, Spatial Technologies for Advancing Research Techniques, hosted by the Department of Geography of the University of the Philippines last night. The small gathering was attended by the faculty, alumni, and students from the host department, as well as undergraduate students from Miriam College.

On behalf of our entire team, Karen, Sheryl, and myself shared about our work on utilising geospatial technologies in support of conserving wildlife and their habitats through our various projects at Fauna & Flora International Philippines over the last five years. I presented our methods, results, and learnings on spatially explicit High Conservation Value Areas, forest biomass estimation using synthetic aperture radar, species distribution modelling, and forest and mangrove cover change detection. We also gladly responded to engaging questions and comments after the presentation.

As a token of appreciation, I got to take this home…

A nice token from last night’s lecture at UPD Geography. My daughter, Dahon, pointed at the map on the mug and said ‘Pilipinas’.

But more than this, I went home fulfilled since it was both an honour and a privilege to be given an opportunity to speak before esteemed faculty members and future geographers about Philippine biodiversity and the role that geospatial technologies play in supporting conservation science and action.
